When synchronizing, your wallet is actually downloading the blockchain which is the record of every single transaction made on the Bitcoin network. Blockchain currently amounts to 9GB of storage which grows even further with each new transaction, hence the slow synchronization.
The wallet will download a blockchain, which has record of each transaction that happened on the system. When you want to install a wallet, just download the entire blockchain. The blockchain requires heavy capacity, so the synchronization is slow.
