the desktop wallets are very secure and it stores the private key into the hard drive. Electrum is one which is preferred the most.

desktop wallet is a very good option. It will store your bitcoins in your computer which I believe is secure.

I would say go for desktop wallet only if you use your computer frequently and you don't need a very high security.
