Is it necessary to provide government issued ID and address for bitcoin?

Tried to buy some bitcoins at a website and they asked for a government issued ID and proof of address. is it really necessary to provide proof and address?

I don't know but I'm sure there are numerous alternatives that don't require this much info. Look them up!

That might be a requirement of certain exchanges. This is only asked for your safety and to make sure you are a genuine buyer/seller.
By providing proof you are marking yourself as a trustworthy user.

Attempted to get some bitcoins at a site and they requested a government provided ID and confirmation of address. is it truly important to give confirmation and address?

yes ryt question, why we need to provide I.D card info to buy bitcoin? That’s because attempted to however bitcoin at a few center points/destinations

I'm certain there are lots of choices that doesn't require that much information to purchase.
